Today was supposed to be a beautiful day. It was supposed to have great weather, great events, and an overall fantastic day. Amie, Xavi and I had planned on going on a hike having a picnic just enjoying the hiking trails of my youth and planning future adventures with my own son.
The weather was amazing. Check.
The car ride was enjoyable. Check
Xavi was getting a nap and would be pleasant. Check.
The first sign of trouble was when we pulled into Rockwood Reservation. We noticed that a particular group was active in the field near the "park offices", this group happens to be perhaps my least favorite group of people. That's right, Boyscouts. They may not have been boyscouts but they looked and acted similar which means they were some type of 'scouting' group. Regardless it was a bad omen for the hike.

Amie and Xavi preparing for the Hike
As we began our hike Xavi had woken up, we put him in the backpack and he promptly fell back asleep.

Undeterred by this development we pressed on.

After climbing the stairs we headed toward a familiar spot. A spot of great memories. A spot that has history. A spot where boys become men. And what did we discover when we got there? Tragedy.

That is right. Tragedy. Nature has been caged.... from nature. Apparently some members of Western St. Louis County don't like caves and the creatures that inhabit them. Something about lowering property values and having "them" ruin the neighborhood. Having this personal vendetta against them, the creatures of this cave have apparently been evicted and forced to seek shelter elsewhere. Presumably St. Charles as the members of that community are more wildlife friendly.
This was perhaps the worst thing I could ever find out today. It is as if my heart had been caged. All because some hippie doesn't want man made interference to the cave. How about you just close down the whole park then? I would like to file a complaint against having the boy scouts on the grass, they were damaging the natural resource and therefore they shouldn't be allowed on it. Can we put a cage around the grass? Is that possible?
Overall it was just a sad sad turn of events. I will always have the memories but unfortunately will no longer be able to pass them on to my children.
